Who We Are

Our organisation is committed to recognising and honouring our responsibility as Tangata Tiriti (People of Treaty) and to nurture the pioneering spirit and values of Sir Edmund HIllary in us all. Our team is diverse, but our shared values and sense of purpose brings us together: EHF is not “work” for us, but a journey to bring transformational change that we deeply believe in and are committed to.

Hillary Institute of International Leadership (HIIL)

The Hillary Institute of International Leadership’s mission is to celebrate and amplify global leaders’ who embody the spirit of Sir Edmund Hillary in addressing the biggest challenges of our times, such as climate change. Founded by Mark Prain in 2006, the Institute was launched in 2007 by Sir Edmund Hillary and patron Helen Clark from Antartica. Each year, the Institute conducts a global search programme for prospective ‘Laureates’ for review by an international board that acts as the jurors for the annual Laureate selection. The Laureate group now numbers eleven, with the appointment of Vanessa Nakate in 2022. In recent years, there has been increasing co-operation between laureates as well as connections into the Fellowship.

Edmund Hillary Fellowship (EHF)

The Edmund Hillary Fellowship (EHF) is a community of exceptional global entrepreneurs, investors and change-makers whose purpose is to partner with Aotearoa NZ to find and build solutions to our toughest challenges. Our vision is that Aotearoa NZ inspires global leadership and solutions for future generations.

EHF began as a public-private partnership with Immigration NZ (INZ) to launch a novel Global Impact Visa (GIVs) programme in 2016. The attraction phase of the pilot was completed in September 2020; there are now 526 Fellows (404 international)) spanning such diverse sectors as aerospace, cleantech, renewable energy, regenerative agriculture and blockchain. Over the next 18 months, as borders re-open, EHF is now shifting focus from attracting talent to connecting Fellows into Aotearoa for impact.

Governance and Strategic Direction

In 2020, a decision was made to consolidate the management and governance of the Hillary Institute and Edmund Hillary Fellowship (EHF). Our governance has integrated, comprising a joint Board Chair, Trustees and Directors. The Hillary Institute and EHF continue to operate as separate legal entities, although EHF recently changed its constitution and has been granted charitable status as a limited liability company in service of HI’s purpose.

Our next step is a managed transition to a shared strategy that unites Laureates and Fellows together under a single Chief Executive.
